Last week, I was proud to join the thousands of Idahoans who participated in the March for Life to advocate for the unborn. The most basic right we have is the right to life, and I am proud to stand in solidarity with the pro-life movement.
Like many of you, I was disturbed by the news that one day before the March for Life, the President signed an order overturning a life-saving policy which withheld U.S. taxpayer dollars from organizations that advocate for and perform abortions and forced sterilizations overseas.
This move to funnel America’s foreign aid dollars toward abortion providers is unacceptable. Earlier this week, I introduced the American Values Act, to permanently prohibit the use of U.S. foreign assistance tax dollars to pay for the performance and promotion of abortion services abroad.
In addition to the American Values Act, I’ve cosponsored numerous pro-life bills over the past several weeks to protect mothers and the unborn, including:
- Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act – Provides protection to infants who are born alive after a failed abortion, and requires healthcare professionals to administer the same care to an abortion survivor that they would to an infant born at the same gestational age.
- No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act – Permanently prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for an abortion. Currently, Congress must include the Hyde Amendment to spending bills annually to prevent taxpayer money from going to abortions.
- Protecting Individuals with Down Syndrome Act – Prohibits an abortion based solely on the fact that the unborn child has Down syndrome. Tragically, approximately 2 out of every 3 unborn children diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted.
- Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act – Outlaws performing or attempting to perform an abortion if the age of the fetus is 20 weeks or more, based on the finding that children can feel pain by no later than 20 weeks post-fertilization.
I am honored to fight for the right to life in the United States Senate, and I won’t stop standing with the pro-life movement until every human life is treated with the dignity and respect it deserves.
