BOISE, Idaho – Today, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence released the fifth and final volume of its investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, entitled “Volume 5: Counterintelligence Threats and Vulnerabilities.”  Volume 5 clearly demonstrates that the committee found no evidence that then-Candidate Trump colluded or attempted to collude with Russia during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, a critical statement of fact that is noticeably absent from the report.

Upon Volume 5’s release, U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), senior member of the Intelligence Committee, gave the following statement regarding his vote against the committee’s Volume 5 findings and his additional views on the report:

“After more than three years of exhaustive investigation, the Senate Intelligence Committee’s bipartisan Russia investigation found no evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government to influence the 2016 election. The facts presented in Volume 5 make this conclusion abundantly clear, however I voted against the report because it fails to explicitly state this critical finding. The additional views I and others authored to accompany the final volume of our investigation plainly state there was no evidence of collusion between then-Candidate Trump and Russia. Make no mistake, Putin and his henchmen conducted a calculated and despicable campaign to undermine the 2016 election for nefarious purposes, but politically motivated accusations attempting to tie the Trump campaign to Russia’s malign actions are completely unfounded.”   

Background: “Volume 5: Counterintelligence Threats and Vulnerabilities” marks the culmination of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s bipartisan investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Over the course of more than three years, Republican and Democratic committee staff reviewed more than one million documents and interviewed over 200 witnesses to produce more than 1,300 pages of analysis that clearly demonstrates that neither then-Candidate Trump nor his campaign colluded with the Russian government in its concerted efforts to meddle in the 2016 election.
