Washington, D.C. – Recognizing the need for responsible, community-driven solutions to the growing opioid epidemic across America, U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-ID) and Mike Crapo (R-ID) supported legislation that will help reduce the use and supply of opioids, improve local response and resources, and drive innovation and long-term solutions. The SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act passed the Senate today and heads to the President.

“Too many Idahoans have suffered the untimely loss of their loved ones due to opioid overdose, and that number is going up each year,” said Senator Risch. “The legislative solution we passed today takes one more step to help law enforcement, medical technicians, caregivers, and others in our local communities fight the opioid epidemic back home by giving them the tools and resources they need. This reflects a culmination of bipartisan efforts over several months, and I thank my colleagues for working together to push this legislation across the finish line.”

“The legislation passed today by the Senate will help Idaho community and health care leaders combat the  growing opioid crisis.  It provides additional treatment and recovery support and, more importantly, supports greater prevention efforts,” said Senator Crapo.  “The overwhelming bipartisan support this measure received demonstrates the urgency needed to address and combat opioid addiction across Idaho and the nation.”

Notably, the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act would:

• Help stop illegal drugs at the border, including stopping the shipment of synthetic opioids;

• Fast-track the research and development of new non-addictive painkillers;

• Expand access to medication-assisted treatment;

• Prevent “doctor-shopping” by improving state prescription drug monitoring programs;

• Improve plans of safe care and support for substance-exposed babies and their mothers
